Always put a full load of clothes in the washing machine. If you don’t have enough clothes for a full load, consider waiting until you do have a full load or run the washing machine on an economy cycle. Also, switch from 60C wash to a 40C wash. Most detergent powders will be just as effective and you will save more than a third of the energy you would have otherwise used.
Do not keep a heat source like a microwave or a toaster near the refrigerator. This increases the consumption of energy to maintain the inside temperature. Do not put any hot food in the fridge. Wait till it cools down. Do not leave the fridge door open longer than necessary. Defrost your fridge regularly. Avoiding ice build up will increase energy efficiency. If there is any fault with the door seal and it does not close completely, get the seal replaced immediately.
Just like the washing machine, do not use the dishwasher if the load is not full. If there are only a small number of items, wait until you have a full load. Also, increase energy efficiency by scraping large food portions from the dishes before filling up the dishwasher.
